Patrik Illo works as a professional glass designer, and forby he also develops his specific artistic programme in which are intermingled the elements of design and free visual art. What is contributing in his production is the fact that he applies the type of thinking that dissociates itself from strict rules of design creation in which it is, paradoxically, based. His products – works of art – are located in certain “inter-space”. Deliberate escape from the area of design reflects the polarity in which he finds himself as an artist working in both spheres. However, it does not mean the negation of rules on both sides; rather on the contrary, it means their ingenious symbiosis. Therefore the artist designs the objects, elaborates them, using appropriate materials, and at the same time puts an emphasis on their visual form. Removing borders between two spheres of artistic production is not the only attribute of this creation. The important is the fact that he uses malfunctioning and bizarre objects to attack visual and emotional memory, as well as our conventional ideas about the purposes of these objects.
