Viktor Frešo has been active for many years in the Slovak art scene, both as artist and multimedia activist. His own personality is very strongly projected into his work, which tempts one to assume that he uses art as a certain form of therapy. He creates concepts and projects in which he critically approaches the contemporary art scene. Artistically, he expresses himself either through artifacts from which he appears separate – objects, installations and so on – and works of which he is personally a part, either indirectly (gestures he leaves behind, traces of his presence, small strokes) or directly (mostly self-portraits). In some of his works he examines the formal expressional arsenal of contemporary art, while in others it is shifted into more “therapy diary” positions. His themes touch upon the problems of self-portraiture and the notorious artist’s ego. Concrete messages are rendered in various media. A powerful dimension of his work is his interest in the mass-media world.
