winner Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos Award , 2007
My audiovisual works focus on speech, noise of speech and its performative powers. Apart from working on the notion of language as the very event of speech manifestation, my inquiry also concerns the way in which it marks the speaking body and vice versa. I work with language and voice as a tool for approaching various subjects, with a particular interest in states of transition, translation, migratory or nomadic being. I am interested in preserving and taking hold of these unstable processes of becoming and tracing how an individual or a group of people make its way through it. I have examined in my recent works the physicality of language and the vulnerabilities experienced and manifested in the process of learning a new language or trying to pronounce a foreign word accurately (e.g. There Is No Is, 2006). I have also, for example, focused on language, loss and the potency of silence in a work that invited individuals of the same generation from Post-Communist Albania to utter words in Russian that is now fast being replaced by other international languages, identifications and desires (A Girl, The Sun, and An Airplane Airplane, 2007). In addition to my audiovisual works, I have co-edited books and initiated projects that function as platforms for exchange of knowledge such as reading groups or an alternative language school for illegal immigrants…
